Ingredients

  • 4–6 medium-sized fish slices (Pomfret, Surmai/Kingfish, or Bangda/Mackerel)
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder (Malvani)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp Malvani masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1–2 tsp lemon juice (for tang)
  • 2–3 tbsp rava (semolina) – for crispiness
  • 1 tbsp rice flour (optional – for extra crunch)
  • 3–4 tbsp oil (preferably coconut oil or Sunflower oil)

Steps

  1. Wash the fish slices thoroughly with water and apply a little turmeric and salt.
  2. Let the fish rest for 10–15 minutes, then rinse it again to remove the raw smell.
  3. In a bowl, prepare the marinade by mixing red chili powder, turmeric powder, ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, and salt.
  4. Coat the fish slices well with the marinade and let them sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb all the flavors.
  5. On a separate plate, mix rava (semolina) with a pinch of salt for the outer coating.
  6. Dredge the marinated fish slices in the rava mixture, pressing gently so the coating sticks evenly.
  7. Heat oil in a pan on medium flame for shallow frying.
  8. Place the coated fish slices in the pan and fry them on both sides until golden brown and crispy, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  9. Once done, remove the fish and place it on a tissue paper to absorb excess oil.
  10. Serve hot with lemon wedges, onion rings, and sol kadhi or rice for a complete coastal experience.
